In the early stages of Virtual Reality and Augmented reality, this Master Thesis set out to explore the roles of these emerging technologies as communication and collaboration mediums.

An innovative approach has been adopted, and three scenarios have been prepared to study how an asymmetric environment, where users could collaborate whether through VR headsets or AR-capable devices, could be implemented and designed.

With the use of Unreal Engine and Proteus VR Multiplayer template, we found a way to add support for AR users (iOS/iPhone) therefore opening up the possibility to study and showcase how the mix of these two realities could be exploited and taken advantage of.

Moreover, as an additional element of investigation, we also added full-body motion capture support, reaching effective full body immersion for the VR user.

Taking advantage of the ease of access that browsers provide, clients can explore their models both in 3D and in VR, to perform many different actions based on their goals.
A CMS platform makes it possible to upload models for architecture and furniture, as well as custom materials. Scenes can be organised into projects, and the client can test out different designs combinations or make architectural decisions. Models are loaded at runtime, and additional objects or materials can be added to the scene and saved.
A poweful WebVR framework, based on the popular Three.JS engine, powers the whole experience, making it possible to experience Hegias in both 3D and VR, if an headset is available. Special techniques have been used to make sure the interactions are intuitive and efficient wether the user is in 3D or VR. The seamless integration with the CMS completes the experience, fusing two seemingly unrelated worlds into one powerful tool.

With this custom-made, cross-platform multiuser framework, it is possible to exchange collaborate in real-time, from everywhere in the world, and take advantage of the power of full immersion and 3D visualisation to plan, simulate and design without any boundaries.

This networking module has been specially designed to support high-frequency data transmission, to convey a seamless sense of immersion given by continuous and flowless movements and actions.

A special handhsaking protocol has been developed to make sure every entity is networked properly, and data-recovery is automated for those packets that couldn't make it (but did try their best!).

The data backend has been developed in Javascript, backed by a node.js server and implementing the Socket.IO library.

The audio backend takes andvantage of Amazon Chime reliable technology to reliably transmit audio of high quality.
